Common Causes of Clogged Drains

Clogged drains can be a nuisance and inconvenience in your home. It’s something that every homeowner will experience at least once in their home. There are number of common causes such as hair, grease, and foreign objects than can contribute a need for drain cleaning services.

It’s important to should an eye out for common signs that mean your drain needs cleaning such as problems with normal toilet flushing, garbage disposals don’t eliminate effectively, or drains that are slow to empty after normal usage.

Here are the common causes of clogged drains:

1. Hair

Hair is one of the most common cause of clogged drains. This is because a build up of hair can bind with grease, food waste, other sticky substances to form clogs. The best way to prevent hair blockages is to ensure all drains have guards to catch hair falling off the body in the shower or getting ready over the sink and bathroom.

2. Grease

Just like build up of hair, grease will build up to form clogs. Grease is a very common cause of clogged drains because any grease that is poured or washed down the sink will stick to the inside of your pipes. Overtime, grease will build up to a point no liquid can pass through and doesn’t leave as easily as you would expect.

3. Foreign Objects

Small, foreign objects, from children’s toys to soap and sanitary items, can easily drop down the drain. The only thing that should go down your sink, drain, or toilet is water, toilet paper, and human waste. You shouldn’t have any other objects such as diapers, tampons, and cotton balls and swabs that go down your sink, drain, or toilet.

4. Food Waste

You should never allow food waste to go down the drain, even when you have a garbage disposal in your sink. You should set up a composting pile to get rid of your waste like oil, grease, tea leaves and coffee grounds that don’t easily break down.

5. Mineral Buildup

Mineral buildup or minerals dissolved in hard water can cause insoluble masses that’ll easily clog your drains. You can install a water softener if hard water is a problem in your area to prevent mineral buildup. If this isn’t an option for you, you can also regularly descale and remove sediment and build up.
